Blurb Copy

A question for readers: when you see a book covered with praise blurbs from other writers, does it encourage you to buy?

The publishing industry seems to consider this kind of blurb copy a marketing necessity. But for me, it's signal not to buy. If a book has praise plastered all over the dust jacket and first several pages it simply makes me think, "this book doth protest too much."

If a book is so great, why not just let it be? Why all the sycophancy and superfluous exclamation points?

I know the book publishing industry isn't exactly in great shape right now. Maybe this is one of the reasons why.
